AKELEY CITY COUNCIL
WORK SESSION
JUNE 18, 2008
6:00 PM CITY HALL
The Akeley City Council met in a work session Wednesday, May 18,
2008 at 6:00 PM. Tom Moore called the meeting to order. Members
present were Tom Moore, Brian Hitchcock, Eric Sjolin and Cliff
Johnson. Frank Lamb was absent. The Pledge of Allegiance was
recited by the Council and attending audience.
Motion by Eric Sjolin seconded by Tom Moore and carried to approve
the consent agenda with the addition of Liquor Store Issue at 5.5.
The topic of Akeley Police Reserves was discussed. The police
reserves will continue to cover beach patrol at the Akeley City
Beach and will assist with Paul Bunyan Days again this year. Police
Chief Eric Klein stated that since he has worked for the city, last
year was the best year due to the extra coverage of the police
reserves. Eric also stated that the VFW had purchased polo shirts
for the reserves to wear while performing security at VFW functions
and that the reserves would be wearing polos while checking IDs in
the liquor store during Paul Bunyan Days rather than the reserve
uniforms. The reserves would however, be wearing their uniforms at
all other locations during Paul Bunyan Days. The Council discussed
where they would like the reserves to be located since Eric Klein
stated he would be having the reserves work in pairs. Some police
reserves will use 4-wheelers which are liability insured by the
owners and Eric said he would like to provide water and Gatorade for
the reserves since they are donating their time. Signs or people
wearing vests will have to direct traffic since some of the streets
will be blocked off during the parade on Sunday.
Eric Sjolin shared information he had found regarding TASER use and
also made some suggestions for the police policy manual since the
subject had come up at the last regular council meeting.
Discussion was held regarding the Local Band Showcase which will be
held on the Friday afternoon/evening of Paul Bunyan Days outside of
the liquor store. This is open for all ages to attend and council
members agreed that all people age 21 and older should wear a
wristband regardless of age. This would help the bartenders know
who they can serve and who is required to be carded before being
served and it would also help police and police reserves know who
should or should not be drinking alcohol. Cliff Johnson stated that
the bartenders need to be sure they aren’t serving those who are
inebriated and Liquor Store Manager Bob Winner replied that dram
shop training will be held on June 22nd for the
bartenders. Some members of the council and others have volunteered
to help with cleanup outside of the liquor store after the Local
Band Showcase is finished. Bob Winner stated the basement of the
liquor store is not a storm shelter but would be available for use
by the public in the event of bad weather.
The possibility of allowing the public to rent city-owned picnic
tables was discussed. By renting the tables the public would be
able to take them where they are needed at a daily rate determined
by the Council.
Bob Winner stated that one of his bartenders is being harassed and
wondered what could be done about it. Different options were
discussed and Eric Klein said he would talk to her to see what she
would like to do.
Motion
by Tom Moore seconded by Brian Hitchcock and carried to adjourn.
